Its easy to think that Deaf individuals may not be as smart but really they are possibly more.
If someone was looking at someone who is Deaf it may be easy to think that they may not be as intellectual as hearing people or as smart as them. When you actually look at everything they actually may just have more knowledge than hearing people, we only use English to communicate when they have ASL as their main source of communication but then also have to learn for the most part the entire English language as well. Although it may be tougher for them to learn the information if the teacher is hearing and are learning through an interpreter. Some of the information may get jumbled together and hard to understand. But looking at everything we have learned and from the panel it may be harder for them to learn and understand or figure out which school is better for them, but when they find which works better for them they can be just like hearing people and do everything that we can do just with out hearing.

I agree with you! Deaf people are easily assumed to be less educated and less intellectual than hearing people when in all reality their being examined in a language based on sounds they cannot hear. It is so easy to assume that deaf people are not intelligent, and some may not be (just as hearing people) however it is not because of their deafness. They can be taught and can learn just as easily and quickly as a hearing person, the only difference is how they are taught. If something is given to them in a language they have a full grasp on, they are able to succeed. Just like you said, the panel exemplified this greatly! No hearing people and deaf people will probably never learn the same, however, the ability to learn is still there despite the lack of hearing. Great insight!
